This paper starts with a survey of the debate on contemporary Scandinavian literature that highlights the urge Scandinavian writers are experiencing to reach out from unreality as a reaction to a widespread sense of virtuality and paralysis. It then highlights how the need of authenticity and the resumption of realism in fiction – which critics have identified as dominant features of the period – are problematized in three recent novels by Jonas Hassen Khemiri, Helle Helle, and Karl Ove Knausgård.
