Object: The use of intravascular devices allows you to infuse liquid nutrient solutions, medications, blood and blood derivatives. Have a valid venous access ease the process of care and healing, this process does not happen only in the hospital but can have continuity at de-hospitalized structures and other types of assistance to the patient’s home. The Italian nursing profession in recent years has developed advanced skills by taking on more responsibility and autonomy decision. Advanced skills have also affected the management and care of central venous catheterization. In this article we will refer to PICC (Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters). Scope: To determine terminal tip location when inserting a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) is a nurse responsibility as malposition might pose a risk to the patient. Until a few years ago, central venous catheters were placed by a clinician, nurse today has all of the skills and scientific knowledge to be able to implant these devices. Materials and methods: The study, conducted in a University Hospital in Rome, revealed that the EKG method is quite simple, easy to learn and to teach, non-invasive, easy to reproduce, safe, and apt to minimize malpositions due to failure of entering the SVC. Data collection took place over a period of six months. Conclusions: The study found that the ECG method has clear advantages in terms of accuracy, cost-effectiveness and feasibility under conditions in which the X-ray control may be difficult or expensive to obtain.
