The writing πυκτ- pro πτυκτ-, attested for the first time in the Galenic corpus, is meant to be a manuscript misinterpretation by most of scholars; this paper aims to demonstrate, by means of some linguistic considerations, that πυκτίς could be a genuine term minted in the second century AD as a calque of Latin pugillares.
