This paper aims at describing the project of amplification of the city of Naples on the Vomero hill through the illustrations published in the main national and European magazines of the Nineteenth and early Twentieth century, in order to deepen the relationship between the elaboration of the visual idea, its graphic expression and the concreteness of this architectural project, expression of a modern architectural current that will be codified in modernism. Through the study of images which have appeared in periodicals such as the Illustrazione Italiana, The Illustrated London News and the Illustration, based in Paris, we can compare the iconographic apparatus of the major periodicals illustrated in Europe. The reading of local magazines, such as the Bollettino of the City of Naples, the Bollettino of the Collegio of Engineers and Architects of Naples or the Poliorama pittoresco, will allow to identify the different iconographic models, developed also in adherence with propaganda of Fascism, which privileges particular point of views in order to enhance the symmetry and the monumentality of the architecture. Specifically, this contribution aims at highlighting the elements that characterize a graphic illustration, starting from the analysis of the drawing as a metaphor of both reality and emotional life, up to the analysis of the representation of architecture as expression of wit and knowledge.
