The collection of sacred art works belonging to Count Alessandro Matterozzi (1713-1783) from Urbania was dispersed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The historical sources mention the significant presence of a group of works in the collection by the Italian Primitives, including an icon with a gold backgrond depicting Christ Bearing the Cross by the Cretan artist Nikolaos Tzafouris (documented 1487-1500). Previously only known through written document, this work can now be identified as the panel preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, since 1929.

Abstract
The collection of sacred art works belonging to Count Alessandro Matterozzi (1713-1783) from Urbania was dispersed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The historical sources mention the significant presence of a group of works in the collection by the Italian Primitives, including an icon with a gold backgrond depicting Christ Bearing the Cross by the Cretan artist Nikolaos Tzafouris (documented 1487-1500). Previously only known through written document, this work can now be identified as the panel preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, since 1929.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
