Additive manufacturing (AM) is one of the leading technologies, which are creating a paradigm shift towards the so-called Industry 4.0. Scholars are still debating on actual and potential impacts of this technology not only on operations strategy, manufacturing and logistics processes, but also on the overall business strategy. This paper aims at investigating how AM technologies influence business performance and how contingent factors drive these performances. Results of research show that introduction of AM provides a competitive advantage for both large and small-medium enterprise, even if profitability of investment depends on the types of material and objectives of using AM.

Abstract

Additive manufacturing (AM) is one of the leading technologies, which are creating a paradigm shift towards the so-called Industry 4.0. Scholars are still debating on actual and potential impacts of this technology not only on operations strategy, manufacturing and logistics processes, but also on the overall business strategy. This paper aims at investigating how AM technologies influence business performance and how contingent factors drive these performances. Results of research show that introduction of AM provides a competitive advantage for both large and small-medium enterprise, even if profitability of investment depends on the types of material and objectives of using AM.
