Urban prefects and the epigraphic evidence of late-antique Rome

Since the publication, in 1962, of the book Les Fastes de la Préfecture de Rome au Bas-Empire, by André Chastagnol, new - and newly interpreted - epigraphic evidence related to urban prefects has been found. Therefore, we are now in the need of a new study that can complete, update and possibly improve with new data our knowledge of the last phase of the urban prefecture. In particular, to better understand the building activity and the re-use of ancient materials in late-antique Rome, attention must be paid also to apparently insignificant insciptions scratched on marble elements; moreover, interesting information can be drawn from a wide variety of inscribed objects like slave collars, tabellae immunitatis, pondera and the so called tesserae monumentorum.
