A new class of strain actuators is presented, which allows the three components of the in‐plane stress tensor in a nanomembrane to be independently controlled. The functionality of the actuators is demonstrated using a semiconductor nanomembrane, whose light emission acts as a local and sensitive strain gauge.

Abstract
