As the organic fraction of municipal solid wastes appears to be an attractive feedstock for the production of volatile fatty acids by acidogenic fermentation, an experimentation was carried out to characterise kinetically the process. As a feed, the soluble fraction obtained by the chemical pretreatment of the waste was used. Various kinetic models were compared by means of advanced regression techniques. The process was adequately described by a Monod-type model in which both the endogenus metabolism and the presence of a non-biodegradable fraction of the substrate were considered. No correlation between the COD of biomass and its ATP content was assessed.

Abstract
As the organic fraction of municipal solid wastes appears to be an attractive feedstock for the production of volatile fatty acids by acidogenic fermentation, an experimentation was carried out to characterise kinetically the process. As a feed, the soluble fraction obtained by the chemical pretreatment of the waste was used. Various kinetic models were compared by means of advanced regression techniques. The process was adequately described by a Monod-type model in which both the endogenus metabolism and the presence of a non-biodegradable fraction of the substrate were considered. No correlation between the COD of biomass and its ATP content was assessed.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
