This paper deals with the etymologies of intruglio and intrugliare, which belong to the most controversial issues in etymological research. While novel data about the documentation of these words before the 19th century would seem to suggest that they irradiated from Naples, the paper argues in favor of Schuchardt’s hypothesis (1898-1899). According to Schuchardt, intruglio and intrugliare are metathetic and syncopated derivatives of lat.*turb(ŭ)lum ‘turbid; confused, shapeless’ and *turb(ŭ)lare ‘to upset, to confuse, to garble’.
Nell'articolo si ricostruisce la storia della parole intruglio e intrugliare e si recupera l'antica proposta etimologica secondo cui le due voci risalirebbero, in ultima analisi, a derivati metatetici e sincopati dei lat. *turbulum e *turbulare.

Abstract
This paper deals with the etymologies of intruglio and intrugliare, which belong to the most controversial issues in etymological research. While novel data about the documentation of these words before the 19th century would seem to suggest that they irradiated from Naples, the paper argues in favor of Schuchardt’s hypothesis (1898-1899). According to Schuchardt, intruglio and intrugliare are metathetic and syncopated derivatives of lat.*turb(ŭ)lum ‘turbid; confused, shapeless’ and *turb(ŭ)lare ‘to upset, to confuse, to garble’.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
