This paper describes a review and analysis of available hydraulic model tests on overspill basins at the crest of sloping structures. Based on an analysis of these tests, further model tests were performed in the wave flume of Ghent University (Belgium) to determine the wave overtopping rate for smooth impermeable sloping structures with various sized overspill basins at the crest. The different test set-ups and test parameters are presented in this paper. Results of the wave overtopping rates are then discussed and extensions to the existing overtopping prediction formulae are proposed. The fitting of the new formula to the different data sets is discussed and the influence of various key geometric parameters is analyzed in detail.
