This article examines Liliana Cavani’s television report "La casa in Italia" (1964) as a source through which to look at some of the most significant aspects of the Italian “great transformation” of the 1950s and 60s. Cavani’s report documents the persistence of large pockets of housing discomfort and witnesses the profound imbalances that the economic miracle, while favoring a general improvement in living conditions, had certainly not removed. It also reveals the transformations coming about in housing cultures, with the rise of new residential models, the aspiration to home ownership and the modernization of home space, the desire for higher levels of comfort and greater intimacy, as well as the emergence of new conflicts along generational and gender lines. Finally, it links the housing problem to the critical aspects of the impetuous urban development, denouncing land and building speculation and the inadequacy of planning legislation.

It also reveals the transformations coming about in housing cultures, with the rise of new residential models, the aspiration to home ownership and the modernization of home space, the desire for higher levels of comfort and greater intimacy, as well as the emergence of new conflicts along generational and gender lines.
