Per una storia della maschera come strumento della professione

The essay aims at reconstructing the history of the mask, intended as an object serving specific dramatic actions. However, its stage fun- ction does not consist of a mere mechanical operation. The mask needs a particular intimate relationship with those who manipulate it, which implies an emotional dimension. This immaterial function closely rela- tes with what is invisible. Thus, the mask ascribes itself to a practical di- mension, deeply rooted in an organic consistency. Just as the hammer’s ergonomics entails a specific use of human muscles, so a mask’s shape demands a certain use of the body, whose implications differ from one culture to another and through time. This text tries to trace a historical profile, although fragmented and conjectural, of the relationship betwe- en the mask and who has worn it through time. Crucial to this analysis is the awareness that the evidence gets scarcer, as the investigation focuses on the sphere of individual experiences.

Il saggio si pone il problema di fare storia della maschera consideran- dola come un oggetto destinato a servire un’azione. Il suo uso, però, non si limita a un’operazione puramente meccanica. La maschera pretende una particolare relazione d’intimità con colui che la manipola e investe una dimensione emotiva. Questo aspetto immateriale della sua funzione la apparenta con l’invisibile e la salda anche a una dimensione pratica profondamente radicata nell’organicità. Esattamente come l’ergonomia di un martello induce un particolare uso dei muscoli, così la forma di una maschera impone un certo uso del corpo il cui significato varia da cultu- ra a cultura e da epoca a epoca. Il saggio tenta di verificare la possibilità di tracciare un profilo storico, anche se frammentario e provvisorio, dei nodi essenziali della relazione che unisce la maschera ai suoi portatori nel corso delle epoche, consapevole che quando ci si avventura nella sfe- ra individuale delle esperienze le evidenze documentarie si assottigliano.
