Starting from an unpublished letter by Theodor Mommsen sent in July 1882 to Robert Sinker, Librarian of Trinity College, the paper traces thefacts that led to the disappearance of the Cantabridgian manuscript O.4.36, usedby Mommsen for the compilation of Jordanes’Romana et Getica and perished inthe fire of his library in 1880. At the same time are reconstructed and investiga-ted the relationships, personal and cultural, which occurred between Mommsenand English academics.
