Involucri

Like our epidermis, the skin of a building has two main functions: one is protection, stopping water getting in and filtering air coming from outside, the other is representative, concurring along with the body to defining the architectural expression of the building, just as skin characterises people’s outer appearance. Like skin, the building envelope is also not immune to the effects of ageing. As architects of our time we know thatin the coming years we increasingly have to address the use of existing buildings, redesigning them, taking care of them, renovating them and when it is inevitable, demolishing them and replacing them.

Come la nostra epidermide, la pelle dell’edificio assolve a due funzioni principali: quella protettiva, che impedisce l’ingresso dell’acqua e filtra i flussi di aria provenienti dall’ambiente esterno, e quella rappresentativa, che concorre, assieme al corpo, a definire l’espressione architettonica dell’edificio, proprio come la pelle connota nell’uomo l’aspetto esteriore. Come la pelle, anche l’involucro dell’edificio, non è immune dall’invecchiamento. Come architetti del nostro tempo sappiamo che nei prossimi anni ci dovremo occupare sempre più del costruito esistente per riprogettarne usi adeguati, curarlo, rinnovarlo e, quando inevitabile, demolirlo e sostituirlo.
