Mill e Spencer su utilità ed evoluzione

Argomento dell’articolo è la controversia sorta tra Herbert Spencer e John Stuart Mill sulla natura dell’utilitarismo. Al centro della disputa fu il tentativo operato da Spencer di riconciliazione tra utilitarismo e intuizionismo sulla base di un’ipotesi evoluzionistica ispirata al meccanismo lamarckiano dell’eredità dei caratteri acquisiti, un tentativo anticipato in una famosa lettera a Mill pubblicata nel 1868 da Alexander Bain. I motivi del rifiuto da parte di Mill del tentativo spenseriano sarebbe diventato evidente dopo la pubblicazione del saggio postumo sulla Natura dove Mill esprime una chiara posizione contro un’etica fondata sugli istinti. The article attempts to reconstruct the controversy about utilitarian ethics which aroused between Herbert Spencer and John Stuart Mill. The main subject of the dispute was Spencer’s attempt to reconcile utilitarianism and intuitionism on the base of the evolutionary hypothesis shaped on the Lamarckian mechanism of heredity of acquired characters, anticipated in a famous letter to Mill published in 1868 by Alexander Bain. The reason’s of Mill’s rejection of Spencer’s attempt would become evident after the publication of the posthumous essay Nature, where Mill took up a clear position against an instinct-based ethics.
