This paper revisits the development of the plural formatives in Italo-Romance as attested in legal documents from the Early Middle Ages (8th century) – a topic which has already been object of interest in the past – on the basis of only now available texts. The almost exclusive occurrence of sigmatic plurals (class I and III; alternation of -i/-os in class II) underpins the hypothesis according to which the later vocalic plurals, which are well attested only from the 9th century onwards, do not continue Vulgar Latin nominative endings, but are the result, at least in class I and class III, of a sound change affecting the original sigmatic endings.

Abstract
This paper revisits the development of the plural formatives in Italo-Romance as attested in legal documents from the Early Middle Ages (8th century) – a topic which has already been object of interest in the past – on the basis of only now available texts. The almost exclusive occurrence of sigmatic plurals (class I and III; alternation of -i/-os in class II) underpins the hypothesis according to which the later vocalic plurals, which are well attested only from the 9th century onwards, do not continue Vulgar Latin nominative endings, but are the result, at least in class I and class III, of a sound change affecting the original sigmatic endings.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
