Une appartenance controversée : trois moments dans le débat autour du statut du Bilâd al-Sûdân

Like any other peripheral region of the Muslim oecumene, where Islamisation was not the long-term outcome of military conquest, sub-Saharan West Africa (aka bilad al-Sudan in pre-colonial Arabic sources) is a region where the definition of the borders between dar al-Isam and dar al-kufr has invariably been far from uncontroversial. The present chapter explores three distinctive moments in which such a debate can be detected from documentary sources, linking it to changing historical contexts and focusing on technical terms adopted.

Come tutti i territori in cui la prima espansione dell’islam non è stata il frutto di una conquista militare, l’Africa subsahariana occidentale (o Bilâd al-Sûdân) è un’area in cui la delimitazione della frontiera tra dâr al-Islâm e dâr al-ḥarb (o dâr al-kufr) non è mai andata da sé. Questo articolo si sofferma su tre momenti storici ben distinti in cui emerge dalle fonti, in modi e con esiti differenti, una discussione intorno a tale frontiera e alle sue implicazioni, prestando particolare attenzione alla terminologia di volta in volta adottata.
