The paper investigates the recent scandal involving Volkswagen and the non-compliance with gas emissions both in the US and Europe. It describes the linguistic strategies used by the company in its attempt to restore consumers' and stakeholders' trust. The analysis is made with the Appraisal theory which highlights how different approaches were adopted in the different phases of the scandal to emphasise the company's expertise and capacity and to divert attention away from criticisms of its lack of integrity and propriety.
