The article aims to analyse the deep interaction between narrative genre, location of the stage and symbolic meaning, proposing a semiotic analysis of three movies (To Rome with love, New moon, the tourist), and the representation between American film narration and Italian setting referring to the tripartite division: realist (socio cultural construction consistent with the reality), impressionist (author’s action in rebuilding the spirit of the place is recognizable) and expressionist (the place is reshaped and stylized in a symbolic way).
