The Preface to the book “Hiera chremata” illustrates the historical processes occurred in Archaic and proto-Classic Greece, causing the establishment, within the main sanctuaries of Greek poleis, of relevant economic funds. Epigraphic, literary and archaeological sources pertaining the sanctuaries of Athens, Argos and Samos demonstrate how such funds, resulting from a progressive hoarding of precious metals (gold, silver etc.), were spent not only for sacred expenses, but to meet the polis’ economic needs as well.
