The essay addresses the issue whether the Lancelot en Prose can be ascribed to a single author who organized the material available, thus creating a unitary narrative, or else whether we must assume that various materials were added to an original nucleus. The author argues that the structure of the poem, as well as the study of its manuscript transmission and of the relation between the different extant versions of the poem all indicate that the Marche de Gaule was indeed such original nucleus.
