The present article discusses some peculiarities of the transmission of Islamic knowledge in subsaharan Africa, focussing on the complementarity of Arabic and local languages. In the second part, some more recent developments of the sociolinguistic dynamics of Islam in Africa are explored, with special reference to the reshaping of relationships between orality and literacy, between learned and popular religion and between Arabic, Western languages and African languages. Indeed, in spite of all these current changes, in this part of the Islamic oecumene older styles of trasmission of knowledge are still proving surprisingly enduring and flexible.
L'articolo ricostruisce alcune peculiarità della trasmissione del sapere islamico in Africa subsahariana, soffermandosi in particolare sui rapporti di complementarietà tra arabo e lingue locali. La seconda parte si sofferma sugli sviluppi più recenti delle dinamiche sociolinguistiche dell'islam in Africa, che passano attraverso una complessa ristrutturazione dei rapporti tra tra oralità e scrittura, tra livelli dotto e popolare e tra lingua araba, lingue occidentali e lingue africane. Malgrado i rapidi cambiamenti in atto, le modalità tradizionali di trasmissione del sapere sembrano dar prova di una sorprendente vitalità e capacità di adattamento.
