The dichotomy North-South denotes in this paper not only the relationship between a non-European country of origin and the European society as it is problematized in selected literary works by four migrant women writers, but also the relationship between the two Dutch-speaking literary fields (the Netherlands and Flanders) as far as migrant literature is concerned. The opening paragraph outlines the theoretical background on which the selection of authors and texts is based. Some diverging features of migrant literature and of its reception in the Netherlands and in Flanders are briefly described in the second section. Aspects of representative literary works are then read in their socio-cultural context in the following sections. Rachida Lamrabet, Chika Unigwe, Yasmine Allas en Ellen Ombre question issues generally related to migration and literature such as the identity quest of the migrant author, her eccentric glance, her in-betweenness and the interplay between the postcolonial and the postmigrant point of view, offering the reader a multilayered and destabilizing view of the so-called multicultural societies.
