“Machiavelli shakespeariano: Policy/politic nei Sonnets”

n this paper we examine the relationship between the political vision of Machiavelli and Shakespeare’s work, with particular reference to the sonnets. In the context of the overall reception of Machiavelli in England through the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and of Shakespeare’s use of Machiavelli in the plays (based on the studies of Praz, Brady, Kahn and Roe), we focus on the sonnets. In the sonnets, the love theme peculiar to the sub-genre is expanded to wider thematic fields, including that of politics. This is apparent in sonnet 94 (Melchiori) but also in sonnets 118 and 124, though the use of terms such as politic and policy, both in their synonymous and antonymous, positive and negative values. Shakespeare moves away from the prevailing negative stereotypes in Elizabethan and Jacobean England, to draw back to the authentic lesson of the Italian thinker, anticipating the new vision of the republican Machiavelli of the second half of the seventeenth century.

Il saggio esamina i rapporti tra la concezione politica machiavelliana e i sonetti di Shakespeare. Dopo aver ricostruito il contesto della ricezione di Machiavelli in Inghilterra, nel corso del Cinque-Seicento, e accennato alle opere drammatiche di Shakespeare che fanno esplicito riferimento a Machiavelli, in base agli studi di Praz, Brady, Kahn e Roe, si indagano in particolare i sonetti, nei quali la tematica prettamente amorosa del sottogenere lirico si amplia, tipicamente, a includere ambiti tematici molto più ampi, incluso quello politico. Ciò è evidente nel sonetto 94 (Melchiori), ma anche i sonetti 118 e 124 manifestano un particolare interesse politico, attraverso l’uso dei termini policy e politic, indagati nelle loro zone sia di sovrapposizione sia di opposizione semantica, e nelle connotazioni negative e positive che assumono. Shakespeare si sottrae agli stereotipi negativi prevalenti nella cultura elisabettiana e giacomiana per risalire alla lezione più autentica dell’intellettuale italiano, e anticipa la nuova visione del Machiavelli repubblicano che si impone nella seconda metà del Seicento.
