During the Middle Ages sculptors, illuminators painters and poets used the image of a man punished in hell with the bag around the neck to represent misers, usurers, sinners, bandits, heretics and excommunicated. The book follows the journey of this defamatory image from the ninth-century Byzantium to eleventh-century Auvergne, from thirteenth-century Dijon to Italian city-communes in the age of Dante and Giotto, tracing the history of a picturure which, while mantaining the same function, had a constant evolution: an image that assumed new meanings while contingencies and contexts were changing giving a decisive contribution to the formation of a shared way of thinking the evil.

Abstract
During the Middle Ages sculptors, illuminators painters and poets used the image of a man punished in hell with the bag around the neck to represent misers, usurers, sinners, bandits, heretics and excommunicated.
