The research focuses on a topic – the application of ITC technologies for cultural heritage – which does not appear to have been adequately developed until now. The reason for this gap is apparently to be found in the fruitless contention between overly confident technicality on one hand, and the exaggerated scepticism which has concerned the cultural debate in the last decade on the other. Instruments conceived for new architectural design and construction have been used inadequately for cultural heritage conservation. However an adequate commitment has not been made to overcome the limitations of new technologies. The route attempted by this research reveals a challenging opportunity, which may develop good practice in gaining and storing knowledge for the conservation process and, at the same time, support planning activity. As well as the adaptation of ICT instruments into systems appropriate for cultural heritage, an interesting perspective also seems relate to proposing a conceptual structure that may assist professionals during the investigation process. This process, although widely developed, remains a tendentious phase of the conservation design, often not consistently conceived. An inadequate comprehension of architecture could compromise the entire conservation process, as a project could be carried out based on a lack of knowledge.
