We know from Philostratus that in addition to having the Panathenaic stadium on the Ardettos hill reconstructed in marble, Herodes Atticus provided a new Panatheniac ship, for the transport of Athena’s peplos, for the Panathenaic festival of AD 143/4. This was not the normal ship used during the Panathenaic procession, but a special one intended to increase Herodes’ prestige and fame. Although its route is debated, this ship ‘moored’ in all probability somewhere in the Ilissos valley, perhaps near the stadium.

Abstract
We know from Philostratus that in addition to having the Panathenaic stadium on the Ardettos hill reconstructed in marble, Herodes Atticus provided a new Panatheniac ship, for the transport of Athena’s peplos, for the Panathenaic festival of AD 143/4. This was not the normal ship used during the Panathenaic procession, but a special one intended to increase Herodes’ prestige and fame. Although its route is debated, this ship ‘moored’ in all probability somewhere in the Ilissos valley, perhaps near the stadium.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
