The chapter sets out the methodological background of the volume. It deals first of all with the definition of the Mediterranean area, secondly with the theoretical foundation of the dialogue across disciplines, thirdly with the definition of a migration system in the Mediterranean and finally it presents a clear picture of migration in the Mediterranean giving a historical overview of stocks and flows and population movements starting from the post WWII period.
