The paradox of development: in between sustainability and equity - The growing demand for natural resources recently draw a lot of attention and placed emphasis on the paradoxical coexistence of two factors required to sustain human development. On the one hand, the increase of the natural resources’ base available; on the other hand, the reduction of human pressure on the environment, that is functional for building up resilience. This problem has often been interpreted with a mere improvement of performance in order to achieve a priori established goals. This study proposes a methodological shift based on the estimate of the minimum amount of resources required to meet a set of basic needs (QES), in order to better identify a specific area of intervention and establish relevant targets. This is a modeling application at the household scale which focuses on the energy needed for domestic use and for commuting. Abstract
