Abstract

The sword and the cross have been largely used as symbols of a conquest that made America the place chosen for Spanish military expansion, and the spread of Christianity. Printers discovered America at the same time that conquistadores did, and -like the latter- printers fought each other in order to take advantage of the great possibilities that the New World offered. That is why the Crombergers -German printers working in Seville-, had made sure the book trade with New Spain was theirs during two generations. The Juntas were among those who contributed most to break this kind of trust. This study analyses the editorial strategies applied by the Juntas to the book trade with New Spain, trying to reconstruct the sinergies of different family groups. Throughout a quantitative and qualitative analysis of different printing workshop's production, it is possible to paint a clear portrait of these brave printers.
