Between 1406 and 1421 Florence acquired the ports of Pisa and Livorno and began its maritime policy by organizing a system of merchant galleys whose functionality was handled by the Consuls of the Sea. Nevertheless, the invasive presence of Arts – of which the consuls were direct offshoot – and the inability of the Florentine ruling class to provide political answers to the new requirements made the Consulate of the Sea an uncompleted magistracy. The paper proposes a preliminary analysis of unpublished documents relative to the Consuls of the Sea of Florence, providing information on the office, on the routes of the Florentine galleys, on the composition of crews, on the goods transported.

Abstract
Between 1406 and 1421 Florence acquired the ports of Pisa and Livorno and began its maritime policy by organizing a system of merchant galleys whose functionality was handled by the Consuls of the Sea. Nevertheless, the invasive presence of Arts – of which the consuls were direct offshoot – and the inability of the Florentine ruling class to provide political answers to the new requirements made the Consulate of the Sea an uncompleted magistracy. The paper proposes a preliminary analysis of unpublished documents relative to the Consuls of the Sea of Florence, providing information on the office, on the routes of the Florentine galleys, on the composition of crews, on the goods transported.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
