Le opportunità offerte dall’esilio: componenti multiculturali e libertà di innovazione nella miniatura avignonese del Trecento

The term exile frequently used to refer to the age of the Avignon papacy implicitly contains a negative sense, nonetheless it is possible to find positive aspects in the migration of artists and patrons from Europe to the curia based in Southern France and in the dynamics of their relationships. The Avignon context, perceivable as a theatre which was free from the expectations weighing on their places of origin, offered an excellent opportunity to innovate and transgess consolidated traditions. The main artists active in Avignon in the first half of the Trecento are therefore investigated in this perspective.

Il termine esilio per identificare l’epoca del papato avignonese contiene implicitamente una connotazione negativa, tuttavia l’autrice coglie nella migrazione di artisti e committenti da tutta Europa e nelle dinamiche dei loro rapporti in un teatro privo del carico di aspettative presenti nelle loro città di origini un carattere assai positivo rispetto alla possibilità di innovare e trasgredire le tradizioni consolidate. I principali artisti attivi ad Avignone nella prima metà del Trecento vengono indagati da questa prospettiva.
