In the Syriac version of the Alexander Romance the graphic oscillation between ‹l› and ‹r› in the rendering of the Greek proper names has been put forward by van Bladel (2001), and by Nöldeke (1890) before him, as a proof of the existence of a Middle Persian intermediate version between the Syriac Romance and its Greek original, because in the Book Pahlavi script used for Middle Persian there is a grapheme representing both /r/ and /l/. I argue that this graphic variation can not be considered a convincing evidence for the hypothesis of the existence of a lost Middle Persian version, as I have argued in some previous works (1998; 2001), but is due to a series of dissimilatory phenomena within the Syriac language, as I think I can prove in this work, providing also new evidence from the phonotactic adaptation rules of Greek and Iranian loans in Syriac.
