Prescriptive attitudes related to women as readers are analyzed in this study through a gender sensitive reading. The changing behaviour of women readers in novels, as it emerges in the second part of the article, counterweights this normative trend and shows how an easier access to books contributed to the developing awareness of women's rights in the wake of first-wave Dutch feminism.

Abstract
Prescriptive attitudes related to women as readers are analyzed in this study through a gender sensitive reading. The changing behaviour of women readers in novels, as it emerges in the second part of the article, counterweights this normative trend and shows how an easier access to books contributed to the developing awareness of women's rights in the wake of first-wave Dutch feminism.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
