As part of a larger project undertaken by the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana itself, the essay looks at the personnel employed by the Vatican in the roles of cardinal-librarians, custodians and scriptores while examining documents from Biblioteca’s archive preserved in its own fonds and supplemented by other sources. The profiles, cultural background and education of the cardinal-librarians (theologians, biblical scholars and historians) are reconstructed and an assessment is made of how the requirements of knowledge were reconciled with the needs for censorial control. By studying the figures of the cardinal-librarians (who especially under the Borghese and Barberini became appannages of the papal family) we can see the important role the Library played in the papacy’s cultural policies between the Counter-Reformation and Baroque periods. No less interesting are the figures of the scriptores and custodians who came to form veritable dynasties like the Ranaldi. Some of these also hailed from elsewhere in Europe and thus, functioned as intermediaries for cultural exchange.

Abstract
Some of these also hailed from elsewhere in Europe and thus, functioned as intermediaries for cultural exchange.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
