Tertullien et le donatisme. Quelques remarques

It is widely thought that Tertullian must be considered the father of Donatism. The author recalls summary Frend’s analysis and, by a detailed comparison between Tertullian and Donatism, highlights some major subjects as: interaction and relationship between the church and the empire, martyrs and martyrdom, ecclesiology, baptism, penitential discipline. It thus appears that, despite the use of similar themes and common rigorist tone, there are many elements of differentiation or even opposition. The Tertullian’s legacy is certainly present within the Donatism, but the specific characteristics of the movement, the long lapse of time and the needs of the moment controversy introduce variants so significant as to prevent the establishment of a direct filiation by the great Carthaginian.

In bibliografia appare diffusa l'idea che Tertulliano debba essere considerato il padre del donatismo. L'autore, dopo aver richiamato in sintesi l'analisi di Frend, opera un confronto puntuale fra Tertulliano ed il donatismo, soffermandosi in particolare su alcuni temi significativi, quali: rapporto chiesa/impero, martirio, ecclesiologia, battesimo, disciplina penitenziale. Emerge così che, nonostante il ricorrere di tematiche simili e la comune impostazione rigorista, molti sono gli elementi di differenziazione o addirittura opposizione. La tradizione tertullianea, dunque, risulta senz'altro operante all'interno del Donatismo, ma le caratteristiche specifiche del movimento, il lungo lasso di tempo intercorso e le esigenze polemiche del momento introducono varianti così significative da non consentire l'affermazione di una filiazione diretta dal grande Cartaginese
