Following the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese war there was a great demand for news about China and the state of the war. The publishing world decided to hire writers and critics as war correspondents and, among them, two women writers were sent to China: Hayashi Fumiko and Yoshiya Nobuko. Their war reporting has an intrinsic quality that cannot be found in the accounts of their colleagues, namely a feminine outlook. I analyze three aspects: the representation of the conflict, the representation of the Japanese army and the Chinese adversaries, and the representation of women. The aim is to ascertain the extent of their contribution to war propaganda and their stance on nationalistic ideology.

Abstract
Following the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese war there was a great demand for news about China and the state of the war. The publishing world decided to hire writers and critics as war correspondents and, among them, two women writers were sent to China: Hayashi Fumiko and Yoshiya Nobuko. Their war reporting has an intrinsic quality that cannot be found in the accounts of their colleagues, namely a feminine outlook. I analyze three aspects: the representation of the conflict, the representation of the Japanese army and the Chinese adversaries, and the representation of women. The aim is to ascertain the extent of their contribution to war propaganda and their stance on nationalistic ideology.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
