Public space, that is the system of open spaces scattered among buildings, represents in contemporary cities a possible ground for conflict resolution, becoming the bearer of environmental and social instances as well as spatial and morphological ones. We investigate public space from the standpoint of its being lived and used by city dwellers, who can thus be outside, walk freely in a landscape that has a close relationship to them and is here considered a value. This research starts from considerations on democratic spaces and on the underlying relationship between the human species and the environment, which has a wide theoretical base in geo-architecture. We can thus configure methodology and research involving the experimentation and reformulation of the multicriteria design: from landscape design and planning, to design for diversity and the management of complexity. Abstract
