Between the 16th and 17th centuries the city of Rome was a place of primary importance for women's monastic institutions, realized both in the re-foundation of ancient cloisters and in the foundation of completely new settlements. This was accompanied by the consequences of the reform of monastic life decreed by the Council of Trent, which reiterated for the nuns the obligation of close enclosure, extending it also to religious communities that have never had it. This book, however, does not intend to reconstruct the history of each cloister existing in the Roman territory but rather their overall reality, focusing on their role within the city's social, political, religious and urban fabric. The influence of the enclosure on religious life, the social history and the number of women who dressed the monastic habit, the rites and practices in their daily life, and the supernatural events or the disordered that occurred. It emerges that monastic life was influenced not only by the decisions of the ecclesiastical hierarchy but also by patronage and matronage relations, woven by the aristocracy inside and outside the cloisters. In this complex and articulated picture, the nuns showed resourcefulness and awareness, not hesitating to promptly intervene in the issues that concerned them.

Abstract
In this complex and articulated picture, the nuns showed resourcefulness and awareness, not hesitating to promptly intervene in the issues that concerned them.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
