Abstract
Concept models can be defined as three-dimensional initial sketches of architectural design ideas. They offer the opportunity both to visualize three-dimensional relationships among parts and to freely test forms and surfaces in three-dimensions without the concern of detailing. Concept models generally show two basic features: they are fast-to-be-built and easy-to-be-modifiable. CAD Drawing and Rapid Prototyping techniques have obviously improved the former, offering a fascinating repertory of surface describing techniques, but monolithic plastic or wooden models are prototypes that can be handled but not played with, as in wire and cardboard models. Foam diffusion has changed modelling practice in OMA, favouring a wider production. At the same time Rem Koolhaas has assigned concept models a further role in the project presentation to better orient public reception.
