Il reimpiego in architettura. Recupero, trasformazione, uso

The issues raised today by the constant waste materials, combined with the concern for the lack of certain natural resources, have meant that, for some years now, the recycling industry has experienced strong growth. This is certainly not a novelty, but rather an old and recurrent phenomenon in time. The volume therefore offers the opportunity to re-read the entire issue that concerns the recovery, recycling and reuse, with the aim of conducting these processes in the practice of building unity and to highlight the different functions assumed from the reuse and recycling over time. With analysis and different disciplinary approaches, will retrace the concrete forms of reuse in architecture in the long term, as well as the reasons and values ​​that the latter are associated in different eras, as an integral and significant than ever of human endeavor. The volume addresses the issue across the board, going to affect together the past and the present age. In addition to studies that address the complex events of the recovery, especially in late antiquity and medieval monuments or parts thereof, or related to specific materials, the metals in the first place, and others go down until the present time frame, for example, the theme of the spoils in contemporary architectural design or even in a perspective of "industrial ecology" aimed at the preservation of non-renewable resources. That practice selective reuse as is regularly demonstrated by the findings from the excavations of the site of Santi Quattro crowned in Rome, or, in a quite different context, in a Roman funerary on the outskirts of Orange. Even in the central the use of pieces of recovery is widespread, with a particular role entrusted to mortars and stilature when it comes to compose masonry elements with very dissimilar between them. But the examples cited in the book are very numerous, include, among others, studies of elements of reuse in the Colosseum, the Roman arches of the medieval houses in the Portico d'Ottavia, great example of recycling and reuse of antiquity to the present days. The publication, in essence, traces in time and space, eminently in terms of archeology and architecture, the ancient and, as we have seen, even brand new practice of reuse and reuse, not only in the field ready building but the much larger values, such as to inform themselves of much of human endeavor.

I problemi oggi suscitati dall'aumento costante dei materiali di scarto, uniti alla preoccupazione per la carenza di alcune risorse naturali, hanno fatto sì che, da qualche anno a questa parte, l'industria del riciclo abbia manifestato un forte sviluppo. Non si tratta certo di una novità, quanto piuttosto di un fenomeno antico e ricorrente nel tempo. Il volume offre, quindi, l'occasione di una rilettura dell'intera problematica che concerne il recupero, il riciclo e il riuso, col fine di condurre i suddetti processi all'unità nella pratica del costruire e di mettere in evidenza le diverse funzioni assunte dal reimpiego e dal riciclo nel tempo. Con analisi e approcci disciplinari diversi, si ripercorrono le forme concrete del reimpiego in architettura nella lunga durata, nonché le ragioni e i valori che a queste ultime sono associate nelle diverse epoche, come parte integrante e quanto mai significative del fare umano. Il volume affronta il tema a tutto campo, andando a interessare unitamente le età passate e la contemporaneità. Accanto a studi che affrontano le complesse vicende del recupero, specie in età tardoantica e medievale, di monumenti o parti di essi, o quelle riguardanti specifici materiali, i metalli in primo luogo, altri scendono fino all’attualità e inquadrano, per esempio, il tema degli spolia nel progetto d’architettura contemporaneo o addirittura in una prospettiva di “ecologia industriale” mirante alla salvaguardia di risorse non rinnovabili. Quella del riuso come pratica selettiva è puntualmente dimostrata da quanto emerso dagli scavi del cantiere dei Ss. Quattro coronati, in Roma, oppure, in un contesto affatto diverso, in un’area funeraria romana alle porte di Orange. Anche nell’Italia centrale l’uso di pezzi di recupero è molto diffuso, con un ruolo particolare affidato alle malte e alle stilature quando si tratta di comporre murature con elementi molto difformi fra loro. Ma gli esempi citati nel volume sono molto numerosi, comprendono, fra gli altri, gli studi su elementi di riuso nel Colosseo, nei portici delle case medievali romane, nel Portico d’Ottavia, grandioso esempio di riciclo e di riuso dall’antichità ai nostri giorni. La pubblicazione, in sostanza, ripercorre nel tempo e nello spazio, eminentemente sotto il profilo dell’archeologia e dell’architettura, l’antichissima e, come s’è visto, anche nuovissima pratica del reimpiego e del riuso, non solo pronte in ambito edilizio ma dalle valenze molto più ampie, tale da informare di sé gran parte del fare umano.
