Idioms and emotions from an ELF perspective

The article presents a survey on the use and creation, and reappropriaton, of metaphors and idioms in English Lingua Franca. After a brief description of the notion of "idioms" from a general point of view, drawing on the main basic assumptions underlying the concept and definition of English as a Lingua Franca as specific area of inquiry in sociolinguistics and applied linguistics, the paper introduces and discusses examples taken from the existing literature covering the specific domain of idiomatic expressions used and modified by international non-native speakers in their interpersonal negotiations and/or conversational exchanges.
