The Central Bank plays an important role in the economic and financial system. The Central Bank is so named because it is, first of all, the bank of banks: the bank to which the others can request access to the necessary liquidity in order to the maintain its financial balance. In addition to pursuing objectives and exercising functions as a bank of banks, the Central Bank exercises functions and pursues specific objectives of monetary policy. The objectives of this chapter are: • provide the tools to understand the mechanisms that regulate the monetary policy decisions and allow the transmission of the effects on the real economy; • reflect on the impact that this brings for banks in terms of management of the balance of income, financial position and results of risk, as well as the reorientation of banks' strategies.
