The magazine of the National Institute of Fascist Culture under chairmanship Giovanni Gentile from birth until 1937 defended cultural policies and ideological conceptions of the philosopher in the fascist regime. He was a follower of Mussolini as a state understood as ethical reality. However the philosopher believed that the state would become a reality only if the individual accepting the government by its laws in his opinion, therefore believed that fundamental task of state was to stimulate the widest possible consensus by persuasion and not by regime’s propaganda, he was also opposed to a reconciliation between church and state that Mussolini aimed to achieve. Therefore when Mussolini signs les pacts with the church and fascism began to became a totalitarian political relations personal and cultural between Mussolini and Gentile began to deteriorate and the collaborators of the magazine was given less freedom to express their ideas. Mussolini was then in the thirties in favor imperialist foreign policy to which the philosopher was contrary.Therefore in 1937 Gentile was forced to resigne by Mussolini from the direction of the Institute and the magazine.
La rivista dell’Istituto Nazionale Fascista di Cultura sotto la presidenza di Giovanni Gentile cercò di difendere le concezioni politiche e culturali degli autori del regime fascista. Gentile era seguace come Mussolini dello Stato come realtà etica. Tuttavia il filosofo riteneva che lo Stato diventasse una realtà solo se l’individuo «accettava» il governo e si lasciava governare dalle sue leggi , a suo avviso pertanto riteneva che compito fondamentale dello Stato fosse quello di suscitare il maggio consenso possibile con la persuasione e non con la propaganda del regime; inoltre era contrario alla conciliazione tra Stato e Chiesa che il duce si proponeva di realizzare. Pertanto quando Mussolini sottoscrisse i Patti Lateranensi ed il fascismo cominciò a divenire uno stato totalitario i rapporti politici, culturali e personali tra il duce e Gentile cominciarono a deteriorarsi e ai collaboratori del periodico venne concessa una libertà di esprimere liberamente il proprio pensiero politico sempre minore. Mussolini era, poi, negli anni Trenta favorevole ad una politica estera imperialista a cui il filosoofo era contrario. Pertanto nel 1937 Gentile fu costretto da Mussolini a dimettersi dalla direzione dell’Istituto e della rivista.
