Introduction. fortress Europe v. compliant Italy. the ambiguous Italian policy towards migrant women

In the introduction, the editor starts with a comparison of two different attitudes towards migration: the ‘Fortress Europe’ approach, which is to say the very strict system by which the European Union requires its Member States to control its borders and, ultimately, to detain immigrants coming from non-member States; and the Italian approach which, on the one hand, resembles the severe EU attitude while on the other hand appearing more compliant to gendered migration. The contribution proposes a preliminary assessment of the features of migration processes to Italy, of the different policies (and legislations) implemented in recent years by the Italian Government and, moreover, of the ambiguous inclination shown by the Italian system towards low-skilled migrant women (very often by amnesty orders).
