At the end of the Millennium, we have seen that the so called two cultures have showed the need to “measure” the value of a novel, an author, an entire literary tradition; or of a product, a piece of information, a Web site. Harold Bloom is looking for a Western Canon for the literary tradition. Larry Page and Sergej Brin, the inventors of Google, are looking for the perfect algorithm that could detect pertinent and reliable information. However, a number, a calculation, an algorithm, cannot supersede the critical approach; and – on the other hand – a text analysis cannot supersede a bibliometric approach. Humanists and scientists must negotiate between numbers and words in order to find a new, honest, trustable, way of evaluating.

Sul finire del millennio, le due culture hanno cercato di fissare un “metro” per poter misurare il valore: di un romanzo, di un autore, di una intera area disciplinare; o, il valore di un prodotto, o di una informazione o di un sito web. Harold Bloom cerca un Canone occidentale per valutare la tradizione letteraria. Larry Page e Sergej Brin, gli inventori di Google, cercano un algoritmo perfetto che possa rivelare informazioni pertinenti e affidabili. Ma in verità, un numero, un calcolo, un algoritmo, non può sostituire un approccio critico; e – d’altra parte – l’analisi testuale non può sostituire l’approccio bibliometrico. Umanisti e scienziati devono “negoziare” tra parole e numeri in modo da trovare un nuovo, onesto, affidabile metodo di valutazione.
