This essay analyses Chinese political culture, which was strongly dominated by Confucianism, the doctrine developed from the teachings of Confucius (551–479 BC): it was reinterpreted in a turning point of the history of the Chinese empire in the late 19th century, in order to seek institutional change. The extreme flexibility of this doctrine is proved also by a contemporary reformulation of it, which is widely widespread today even in the intellectual circles of the People's Republic of China
