The paper focuses on the place of the philosophy of Albert Camus and Karl Jaspers in Hrabal's poetics. Bohumil Hrabal's novel Kain (1949) appears to be one of the most relevant Czech contributions to literary existencialism. Moreover, the paper deals with the relationship between existencialism and its Czech version, named "totální realismus".
