This paper is a new interpretation of Cicero's famous passage on the diphthong /ej/. The "low" and "archaic" pronunciation stigmatised by Cicero in "Brutus" and "De oratore" is the long high vowel /e:/; the terminology adopted by the great Roman orator to describe this sociolectal allophone is graphocentric.
